John and I were visiting Charleston, South Carolina in the early spring. The houses fascinated me because they were all turned sideways, laid out like a row of dominoes. Each house had a distinctive personality, with the style and beauty of each clamoring for attention. We were strolling one evening and went down a side street that was loaded with overhanging trees and more of the “sideways” houses. This house caught my attention because it looked so welcoming and inviting. It seemed to say, “Come in and sit for a while.” I knew I wanted to paint that scene as a memory to this unique city.
